Solid Waste Fee

Solid Waste & Recycling

What is this "Solid Waste" Special Assessment on my 2016 Property Tax Statement?

The Solid Waste Management Fee is authorized under Minnesota State Statute
400.08. The Pine County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on

October 6, 2015 in consideration of imposing the fee. The fee will be used to make improvements to the solid waste management practices in Pine County.

The fee for 2016 is $6 per improved taxable property. If the fee is showing on your  property tax statement and your property is not improved, please complete an appeal form.

In 2016, this fee is going to be used to open a Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The facility will be located at the Pine City Hwy Garage and the opening date is expected to be June 1st. It will be open Tuesdays from 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 8am-2pm through October 31st. The residential items that are accepted are items such as paints, stains, automotive liquids, pesticides, cleaners, aerosols, florescent lights, and batteries.

There is no charge to dispose of waste at the facility for residents of Pine County or anyone who paid the fee on their property tax statement. Non-residents can still utilize the facility but will be charged a base fee of $6 plus $1.50 per pound of waste or a per bulb charge.

The County Board can revisit the fee annually to decide whether they want to continue it or change the amount.

Other items the fee may be used for in future years: expanding the county’s recycling program (recycle sheds, making them better), expanding the Transfer Station Recycle program to dispose of mattresses, electronics, tires, etc and any other solid waste improvements that may be presented.
